“The Lord Is My Shepherd” – Psalm 23:1
Psalm 23:1 begins with these simple but powerful words: "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." In ancient times, a shepherd was someone who lovingly cared for a flock of sheep—guiding them to green grass, protecting them from danger, and making sure they were never lost. The Bible uses this picture to help us understand what God is like. He is not distant or cold—He is close, kind, and caring. Just like a shepherd knows each sheep by name, God knows you. He knows your voice, your thoughts, your fears, and your dreams. When you feel scared, God is right there to comfort you. When you feel lonely or lost, He gently leads you back to safety. The song, “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” was written so children can sing about how they are never truly alone—because God is always with them. He gives peace when we're worried, joy when we're sad, and love that never runs out. It’s a reminder for every young heart that they are special, seen, and surrounded by a God who never lets go.
As we grow older, we begin to understand that Psalm 23:1 is about much more than just physical needs. When it says, "I shall not want," it doesn’t mean we’ll get everything we ever wish for—it means that in God, we have everything we truly need. He provides what the heart hungers for: peace in times of stress, strength in seasons of weakness, and hope when life gets dark. As adults, we carry burdens—responsibilities, worries, broken dreams, financial pressures, relationships, health challenges. But God, our Shepherd, walks with us in every step. He doesn't promise a life without valleys, but He does promise His presence in the valleys. The song reflects that truth by saying things like “He holds my hand through valley and fear” and “His goodness follows all my days.” It's written so even adults can sing and remember that provision from God is not only about material things—but also emotional strength, spiritual nourishment, and deep soul care. God is a Provider who restores our hearts and fills the emptiness with His presence.
Psalm 23 is more than a comforting poem—it is a life declaration. King David, who wrote it, was once a shepherd himself. He knew what it meant to protect, feed, and lead sheep. When he called God his Shepherd, it was personal. He was saying, “The same way I took care of my sheep, God takes care of me—and even better.” The last part of the song and the psalm both say that God's goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives, and we will dwell in His house forever. This is the beauty of our faith—God’s love never ends. It follows us from childhood to old age, from the mountain tops to the deepest valleys. It reaches us when we’re at our strongest and holds us when we’re weak. Whether we sing this song in a children’s church or whisper it in a hospital bed, its truth stands firm: God is the Shepherd of every generation. His provision goes beyond time. His protection stretches beyond this life. And His love—faithful, gentle, powerful—never ends.
